In 2006, Makivik and the Kativik Regional Government initiated the NYHDP, to uniformly develop a regional minor hockey structure in the context of crime prevention campaign, and as a way to promote education, physical activities, and healthy lifestyles for the youth of Nunavik. Administrated and developed in collaboration with former NHL player and Olympian Joé Juneau, the program is offered to all 14 communities in Nunavik.
