Regional Minor Hockey Tournaments

We are very proud to announce that Makivik, as the promoter and administrator of the Nunavik Youth Hockey Development Program (NYHDP), and its board of executive has approved the recommendation to create regional minor hockey tournaments, previously submitted by our NYHDP team of instructors and educators. Makivik strongly believes that by having these tournaments, it will help stimulating more communities to properly implement the program that is meant to use hockey as an incentive for the children to do well in school in regards to attendance, behavior and effort.

To participate in a tournament, fill out the document below:

A budget was therefore approved to help communities to fund and put in place these different tournaments for the Spring of 2012. A total of five events could possibly be hosted by communities interested to organize these competitions for the following categories; Atom (8-10 years old), Peewee (11-12 years old), Bantam (13-14 years old), Midget (15-17 years old), and Juvenile Girl (13-17 years old).

Nunavik already has a hockey tournament history with the Ungava Cup and Hudson Cup for Women and Men. It is now time to do the same for our youth in providing these annual events so our children can have the same opportunity as the adults to travel to other villages and participate in hockey tournaments.

The NYHDP Regional Minor Hockey Tournaments, promoted and sponsored by Makivik, are meant to:

  • Create an incentive for the communities to properly implement the NYHDP and to follow the protocol while respecting the program’s education mandate.
  • Create an annual event for the children participating in the NYHDP to play hockey and compete within the region.
  • Create an occasion for the children participating in the NYHDP to travel and make friends from other communities.
  • Create an occasion for parents and adults to get involved with minor hockey and youth development.
  • Create an incentive for the children to do well in school in respect to attendance, behavior and effort.

Only villages that have made an honest effort to properly implement the NYHDP and who have followed the protocol will be allowed to participate in hosting a tournament and/or to register a team to participate in. The smaller villages will be able to join efforts with another community so they can be enough players to form an organization/team. Ex: Aupaluk and Tasiujaq

The communities who will be chosen to host a NYHDP Minor Hockey Tournament will need to form a local "hockey tournament" committee to oversee the planning and aftermath of the tournament. Each member of the committee would have specific tasks and would also have to find other volunteers working under him to assure the proper coordination and to complete numerous tasks such as:

Teams and students-players registration (respecting age groups and categories)

  • Accommodations (lodging and food)
  • Regional flight bookings for all participants (including 3-5 chaperons per team depending of the category/age group)
  • Local transportation (school bus, vans, pickup truck)
  • Tournament statistics
  • Security
  • Medals/banners/trophies orders
  • Officials (Referees and time keepers)

Here are the criteria that will need to be followed and respected in order for a community to host a NYHDP minor hockey tournament, and for municipalities/school to register teams to participate and compete in these events

  • Verify that the communities who want to register have followed the NYHDP during the season
